Using Overlearning

Overlearning means practising spelling words beyond just being able to recall them correctly—it involves reinforcing the words until they can be recalled effortlessly and are resistant to forgetting. This technique ensures quicker recall and greater confidence, especially in high-pressure situations like tests.

How to do it

To achieve overlearning, revisit already-taught words through activities such as flashcards, spelling games, or writing exercises (or simply just going over them again and again).  Look for signs like consistent accuracy and fluency when a word is used in different contexts. It’s particularly useful for learners aged nine and above, as their memory systems benefit from deeper repetition and practice. Remember, the sweet spot is 90 to 95% correct.
