What is dyslexia?

The Delphi Definition of Dyslexia provides a comprehensive explanation: "Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that primarily affects the development of literacy and language-related skills. It is likely to be present at birth and to be lifelong in its effects. It is characterised by difficulties with phonological processing, rapid naming, working memory, processing speed, and the automatic development of skills that may not match an individual's other cognitive abilities. It tends to run in families and occurs across the range of intellectual abilities."

Fixed Challenges and Areas for Improvement

Some challenges associated with dyslexia are relatively fixed, such as working memory, which may remain consistent over time. However, other areas, like phonological awareness, processing speed, reading, and spelling, can be significantly improved with targeted interventions and support.
